A Grey is a horse with many colors

A White horse is a Grey – Everyone knows that! But it’s not that easy. Why can black, brown, or other colored horses be a grey too, that is what you will learn here!

All horses that are white or become white in the span of their life are called “Grey”. Many Grey’s are born in one of the many primary colors of Horses. So they can not be recognized as gray in their younger age, because they can come in all Coat colors possible.

In the span of time they “gray out”. That is what professionals call the peculiarity of the coat getting lighter. They get more and more small white hairs until eventually they are white - this can even take 10 years! All Greys carry a certain gene, The so-called “Grey-Gene”, that ensures that over the years less Color-Fur gets created. If a Fur does not have any more color than it is White.

Even in Foals there are already hints on if they will become a Grey later in life or not. If you can already see white hair around their eyes, you can assume that they will be grayed out.

It is a Grey and it will loose Fur color throughout the year. Ah!
